Many people know storage technology is overpriced, but they acknowledge that this is just the way it is. If customers are willing to bear the burden, then the price must fit the market. It’s just Adam Smith’s free-market capitalism, they argue. Anyone who questions this is a radical of one sort or another.

Retrieval of files from the tape NAS will take longer than from rotational disk, of course. But it won’t be much slower than downloading a PDF file, a music file or a video from a website, which we do every day. Think of it as a NAS on steroids.

A child’s journey into adulthood is marked by two things: extraordinary perception of basic realities, even if these are cast simplistically in black and white, and rebellion against all authority. The former characteristic, the ability to perceive basic realities, leads to a condemnation of the way things are and clarity about how they should be. The latter, rebellion, often engenders rejection of any nuanced explanations for the status quo and refusal of authorities that have allowed an imperfect status quo to persist.

Things have gotten so bad that VMware has implemented VMware vStorage APIs for Array Integration (VAAs). This is a set of primitives intended to “more tightly integrate storage with virtual hosts.” VMware has arbitrarily added these commands to the SCSI set – that is, without normal consideration, review or approval by the ANSI committee that is responsible for the SCSI standard.

Recently tape backup has come under the sniper scope of large storage array vendors like EMC. Just as they worked to undercut the perceived efficacy of optical storage, they are now targeting tape, in part with a bumper sticker proclaiming that “Tape sucks!” Originally, I thought that this was simply a reuse of a leftover inventory of stickers from Data Domain, recently purchased by EMC. However, the new stickers seem to be better manufactured.

But the real cost driver in storage is the lack of unified storage management. The singular feature of the mainframe environment that did not transfer into open-systems computing was a common management scheme that enabled dynamic resource-pooling and dynamic allocation of resources to application workloads in a highly manageable way. We don’t have unified storage management today, mainly because the industry doesn’t want us to.

Storage is the big part of the cost iceberg, submerged beneath the waterline of our virtualization vision, out of view and ready to sink our most unsinkable project plans.

Truth be told, virtually no one is going to virtualize five thousand desktops all at once―not even the large insurance companies or government research labs that actually have desktops in those numbers. It is more likely that companies will tread cautiously when pursuing a desktop virtualization strategy, virtualizing only a handful of machines at a time.

Two European data management software vendors have made their entrée to the US storage market in the past few months: UK-based BridgeHead Software and Germany-based dataglobal. They are taking distinctly different approaches to the core problems of data archiving. Both businesses may actually help companies on my side of the pond begin to get their storage junk drawers into some semblance of order.

Just to be mean, I endure a vendor’s briefing, then play the devil’s advocate. By stove-piping software functionality on the array controller, I ask, aren’t you actually locking in the customer and locking out your competitors?
